Welcome
to the Skidmore Psychology Department Participant Review Board (PRB)
Website
The
function of the PRB is to protect the safety, welfare, rights, and
privacy of all participants in Psychology Department research, according
to federal guidelines. The instructions on this page provide you
with the directions and forms you need to submit a research proposal
for consideration.
Does
Your Project Require Review?
Your
project must be reviewed if:
1. You are utilizing
human participants in your research, AND
2. Your data
collection methods are systematic and methodical, AND
3. The
goal of your research activities is to contribute to the generalizable
scientific knowledge base of a discipline (e.g., you hope to publish
your results in a scholarly journal or present your findings at
a conference)
To
Which Committee Should I Submit My Proposal?
There
are two different committees that review psychology department research
proposals: (1) the college-wide Institutional Review Board (IRB),
or (2) the departmental Participant Review Board (PRB).
Your
project must be submitted to the IRB if:
1. It includes
as participants, prisoners, fetuses, pregnant women, the seriously
ill, or mentally or cognitively compromised persons, including
those who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, OR
2. It involves
sensitive issues including sexual behavior, illegal conduct, drug
and/or alcohol use, OR
3. It
involves deception, OR
4. It involves
more than minimal risk, meaning that the probability and magnitude
of discomfort anticipated in the proposed research are greater
than ordinarily encountered in daily life or in the performance
or routine physical or psychological examinations or tests.
To
submit a research proposal to the IRB, click on the link

Submitting
Proposals to the Psychology PRB
If
your research project requires a review, but none of the above four
criteria apply, you may submit it to the Psychology Department PRB.
To submit to the Psychology department PRB follow these instructions:
Psychology
PRB Proposal Submission Process:
1. Principal
Investigator (PI) completes the Skidmore
College Institutional Review Board Research
Proposal Template.
To
submit a research proposal to the PRB, click on
the link below and follow the submission instructions
there:
https://www2.skidmore.edu/prb/auth/login.cfm
|
2. PI
e-mails all supporting documents to prb@skidmore.edu. Supporting
documents include the Informed Consent Form (prepared using
the Skidmore College College's Institutional Review Board Informed
Consent Form Template), the debriefing, copies of all
questionnaires and data collection instruments, and any other
supporting documentation. |
3. If
the PI is a student, the Electronic Submission will trigger
an email to the faculty advisor requesting that she/he send
an email to prb@skidmore.edu, indicating that the faculty
member has seen and approved all materials in the research
proposal. The review of a student PI proposal will begin
after the chair of PRB receives this electronic signature
from the faculty advisor. |
4. The
PRB Chair will assign two members to review each proposal. She/he
will notify the PI when materials have been received and
who the contact person will be for the project proposal |
5. The
PRB will respond to all proposals within two weeks after
the proposal is submitted (including faculty advisor approval
email). Proposals that are submitted after November
30 will be reviewed during the spring semester. |

Frequently
Asked Questions About PRB
Q: I'm
doing a class project. Does it have to be reviewed by the
PRB?
A: Class
or lab projects that are being carried out for teaching
purposes do not have to be reviewed by the PRB. Whether
or not the PRB reviews research for a class project, it
is expected that any research conducted by students, faculty,
or staff will be uphold the same ethical treatment of research
participants as projects that are reviewed by the PRB. |
Q: Do
projects that are presented at the Academic Festival have
to be reviewed by the PRB?
A: If
it is possible that you might present your findings beyond
Skidmore College, at a professional conference, then you
should go through a review by the PRB before you collect
data. If you would not present your findings, even
if they turn out to be very theoretically interesting and
important, then your Academic Festival project does not
require review. |
Q: How
long does it take to get my project reviewed by the PRB?
A: The
PRB will respond within two weeks after receiving the proposal. In
order to receive feedback during the fall semester, proposals
must be submitted by November 30. In the case of student
PIs, the review will begin when the chair of PRB receives
the an email from the faculty advisor indicating that she
or he has read the student project proposal and approves
of it. |
Q: How
do I submit a proposal to the IRB?
A:To
submit a research proposal to the IRB, click
on the link to the IRB webpage and follow the submission
instructions there:
http://www.skidmore.edu/academics/CFG/irb/index.htm |
Q: Once
a proposal is submitted, what happens?
A: The
PRB Chair will assign the proposal to be read by two members
of PRB. One of the reviewers will summarize the feedback
from both reviewers and email a response to the PI (and
to the faculty advisor if the PI is a student). The
reviewers can decide that the research proposal is approved
as is, needs minor modifications, requires significant
changes, or can not be approved because of significant
risks that are posed to the participants. |
